NOVARA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, BETWEEN HISTORY AND NATURE

Novara / Proh / Briona / Barengo / Oleggio / Bellinzago / Dulzago Abbey / Caltignaga

This route begins from Novara and continues through the plain with rice-fields, between the Sesia’s and Ticino’s shore, near the border with the Lombardy.
The visit of Novara begins from the imposing  Basilica of San Gaudenzio , with its famous cupola made by Antonelli, that dominates the city, added at the half of the 1800's. Also made by Antonelli the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, erected in the place of an ancient church; in the architectonic complex are interesting the cloister (XI  century) and the oratory, that conserves an important cycle of frescoes (XII century).
It is continued towards the Baptistery, paleochristian age, remade in the centuries, that keeps a precious cycle of frescoes of the first years of the XI century
.
In the historical center it can be
taken a walk under the porticoes of Martiri della Libertà Square, but also in Cesar Battisti Square, said "Piazza delle Erbe", the social and economic center of the city.
If you like history you must go to the annual historical reminiscence of
Battle of Novara(23 March 1849).
In order to complete the visit the two typical cakes can be tasted: the famous "biscottini" (made with cinnamon) and the "
San Gaudenzio bread(made with almonds).
From
Novara, following the State Road 299 it is possible to see the Barrage Natural Reserve; inside there are the small towns of Briona, interesting for the Church of Sant'Alessandro and the castle (XV-XVI century), Proh and Barengo of which it is important to remember the castles.
From Barengo it is continued towards the
Valley of Ticino Natural Park, in Oleggio direction, interesting the parochial church of SS. Pietro and Paolo made by Antonelli and, then, Bellinzago, that conserves an ancient still working flour mill.
The successive stage is Dulzago Abbey, where the ancient  Church of San Giulio (XII century) rises, in great part remade in the following centuries.
Finally it is returned in Novara direction, passing through Caltignaga, with its interesting castle; the small town makes part of the Lagoni
Mercurago Natural Oasis.
